“Martyn’s Law will ensure venue operators have an explicit and codified responsibility to protect the public by implementing appropriate counter-terrorism measures. Staff are an invaluable component of any security plan, and it is critical that companies ensure they are adequately trained to not only identify but act on suspicious behaviour as it happens. By equipping personnel with the skills to recognise early warning signs of terrorist activity, an incident can be intercepted before it’s too late.

Front-of-house staff, including bartenders, ushers, and waiters all have the capacity to notice suspicious behaviour and flag it to security personnel, who must then be confident in taking action and intercepting. Quality counter-terrorism training is a low-cost, high-impact solution that can be provided to all staff to bolster one’s security apparatus and allow for key information-sharing as outlined in the bill.”
