Recognition of Firearms and Explosives (RFX) Instructor Course

This course will ensure participants acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently design and deliver RFX training for transport security staff in recognition of firearms, explosives, incendiary devices and their component parts, dangerous goods, and chemical and biological devices.

By taking their understanding to the next level, participants can better support others to recognise and respond to prohibited items in accordance with their security programme.

Course Overview

Delegates will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to train staff in the recognition of firearms, explosives, incendiary devices and their components. It is an essential course for aviation security instructors who are required to deliver the RFX modules that reside in certain aviation security syllabuses, such as Ground Security Operative (GSO) / Supervisor (GSS), Cargo and In-Flight Supplies (IFS).

The recurrent course is designed to refresh and update the knowledge of those qualified and practising as RFX instructors.

Course Content 

The course covers a wide range of modules, including:

  • Introduction to Explosives, Incendiaries, Their Effects and Composition
  • The Effects of Explosive and Incendiary Devices
  • Firearms and Ammunition
  • Detection Of Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives and Incendiaries
  • Human Injuries
  • Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Weapons (CBRN)
  • Dangerous Goods (DG)
  • Instruction of RFX

 Course Format

Pre-course learning will be delivered online for the RFX Initial course.

The RFX Initial combines presentations, discussions, practical exercises and a live demonstration of the effects of firearms and explosives.

The recurrent course is offered through an instructor-led, classroom course.
